Most of us men are a bit blunt when it comes to phone etiquette. It probably has something to do with the way we communicate in general. Men are only interested in exchanging the facts. This short, sometimes rude form of communication is definitely not how to talk to women on the phone. Here are 5 important lessons every man must learn:

1. It is not your buddy!

Women are much more sensitive than men. Sure, you can joke around with your buddy, but the same joke can upset a woman very much. Always keep in mind that she might take the things you say jokingly, very personal. Always be polite.

2. It is not a race!

Women take their time when communicating. Men want to get it over with. If you really want to make an impression, don’t make it known that you are in a hurry to get of the phone (even if you are). Stay calm and try to enjoy it.

3. Listen!

The biggest lesson when it comes to how to talk to women on the phone is to listen! Listen very carefully. Women tend to send messages not only by what they say, but also the way they say it. You might think she says “It is fine” when the tone of her voice clearly implies it is “not that fine”.

4. Relate!

If she wanted to talk to her plants, she would. Try and relate to her situation. Any woman will appreciate your effort to really try understanding what she is telling you. It might sound like simple things to you, but it may mean a lot to her.

5. Reply!

“Yes” and “No” are great answers when you are talking to a call centre, but not when you are talking to women. Elaborate a little bit on your answers. This will assure her that you are listening to her and that you understand the situation.
